The Ailments of the Modern Church: A Call to Return to First Love

In an ever-changing world, the church faces numerous challenges threatening its vitality and purpose. If left unaddressed, these challenges can lead to a decline in spiritual hunger, a loss of direction, and a weakening of the church’s impact on society. As followers of Christ, it is crucial to identify these ailments and take proactive steps to address them, ensuring that the church remains a beacon of hope, love, and truth.

Compromise with Worldly Values

One of the most significant challenges facing the modern church is the temptation to compromise with worldly values and beliefs. The pressure to conform to societal norms can dilute biblical truths and weaken the church’s moral stance.

Scripture: Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by renewing your mind. Then you can test and approve God’s will—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”

Lack of Genuine Worship

Many churches today increasingly emphasize entertainment and performance-driven worship rather than heartfelt, Spirit-led worship. It may result in a superficial spiritual encounter and hinder a deeper connection with God.

John 4:24: “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and truth.”

Spiritual Lukewarmness

The church’s lukewarmness, characterized by complacency and a lack of passion for God, is a serious concern. This lukewarmness can stifle spiritual growth and hinder the church’s effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.

Revelation 3:15–16: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

Division and Disunity

Various divisions can exist within the church and hinder its ability to function effectively as the body of Christ. 

These divisions can arise due to differences in beliefs or interpretations of doctrine, personal conflicts between individuals or groups, or cultural divides that result from differences in practices, values, or traditions. 

Such divisions can lead to a communication breakdown, a lack of trust, and even a sense of alienation among church members. As a result, the church may find it challenging to carry out its mission of spreading the message of Christ and serving its community cohesively and harmoniously. 

Therefore, the church must address these divisions and foster unity, understanding, and mutual respect among its members. Unity is necessary for the church to fulfill its calling and impact the world.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10: “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Neglect of Discipleship

The lack of emphasis on discipleship and spiritual formation has resulted in many believers needing to be more mature in their faith.

Without proper guidance and mentorship, Christians can struggle to grow in their relationship with God and effectively live out their faith.

Scripture: Matthew 28:19–20: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you to the very end of the age.”

A Call to Return to First Love

The remedy for these ailments lies in a return to our first love – Jesus Christ. By refocusing our hearts and minds on Him, we can rediscover the passion, purity, and power that characterized the early church.

Scripture: Revelation 2:4-5 – “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.”

In today’s world, the church must awaken, seize the moment, and rekindle its love for God and His Word. With the rise of secularism and the increasing number of people turning away from religion, it is more important than ever for the church to be a beacon of hope and faith. 

According to Matthew 9:37, Jesus stated that the workers are scarce despite the ripe harvest. 

Consequently, the church must embody the workers mentioned by Jesus. It entails spreading God’s word, bringing light to the darkness, and leading through personal actions. By doing so, the church can help to get more people to God and strengthen the faith of those who already believe. 

Now is the moment for the church to step up and change the world. The church can fulfill its vital role in society and contribute to a better future for everybody with God’s assistance and direction.

 Let us rise as faithful workers in His vineyard, committed to proclaiming the Gospel, making disciples, and experiencing God’s manifest presence in our midst.
